Afternoon tea is a well-known British tradition. It usually starts with fingersized sandwiches, followed by scones with jam and cream, and finally a selection of cakes. Alongside, of course, there are lots of cups of tea.

Scones are the most common English teatime treat, believed to have originated in Scotland. They are small round cakes similar to bread, made of wheat flour, sugar, butter, milk and sometimes eggs. The texture of the interior of the scone should be light and soft.

Scones are traditionally served warm with butter, jam and cream. However, many of the scone recipes today that are flavoured with fruits, spices and nuts are best eaten plain.

Classic Scones Recipe Ingredients:

225 g self raising flour
a pinch of salt
50 g butter
25 g sugar
150 ml milk
1 egg

Preparation method

• Put the flour, salt and butter in a bowl and mix them with your fingers.
• Add the sugar and the milk and continue mixing until you get a soft dough.
• Put the dough on a floured work surface and make it into a flat shape.
• Cut into small round shapes.
• Brush the top of the scones with the beaten egg and bake them in the hot oven for 12-15 minutes until well risen and golden.
• Serve with butter and jam or clotted cream.
